Today, the Supreme Court overturned a 63 year-old law that restricted what corporations and labor organizations may spend to sway the vote in federal elections.

Under the argument that freedom of speech was being violated, five Supreme Court judges have now effectively placed powerful and wealthy corporations and labor organizations in a position to usurp the voice of the common voter.

When did a non-human thing like a corporation or a labor union get granted an individual right - Freedom of Speech? Do you think the founding fathers had Wal-Mart in mind or Haliburton when they crafted the Bills of Rights?

"The bottom line is, the Supreme Court has just predetermined the winners of next November's election. It won't be the Republican or the Democrats and it won't be the American people; it will be corporate America," Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said.

They are facing some financial strain on top of all of the grief and loss they are contending with, due to the need to pay for funerals and legal bills related to securing custody of Sean, and getting him counseling and support.

On November 28 Karen Kahler, and her daughters Emily and Lauren Kahler, former residents of Weatherford, were shot to death while visiting Karen's grandmother Dorothy in Burlingame, Kansas over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Dorothy was wounded and later succumbed to her wounds. Former Weatherford Utilities Director Kraig Kahler is accued of the murders and is under arrest in Kansas. Son Sean Kahler was apparently in the home when the shooting started but escaped and ran for help. There's plenty of news all over the internet for those who want more details and I'm not going into it all here.

Those of us who knew the Kahlers are in shock. When they lived in Weatherford they seemed like a family right out of the Ozzie & Harriet days. At the memorial service in Kansas last weekend I was struck by how many people that I knew from Weatherford were there, and by the realization that Karen Kahler was the person who introduced most of us to one another. Karens was a "Connector". She was a builder of community. Karen died at her grandma's house while doing what was most important to her. She was celebrating Thanksgiving with her family. Karen was a friend and an inspiration to so many of us and she will be missed.

Emily and Lauren were wonderful, beautiful, funny and amazing kids in so many ways. Emily and my daughter Cheyney were best friends for 10 years, and if Cheyney wasn't at Emily's house, Emily was probably at our house. We were all so sad when they moved away. But they came to visit and Cheyney went to visit, and text messaging and free long distance calls kept them in touch. I always wondered how all of these girls would turn out. I used to try to picture them at age 30, or age 50. I wondered if they would still all be great friends. None of us ever dreamed something like this would ever happen.

There is going to be a memorial service on January 3, 2009 at Craig's Music on Spring St. in Weatherford.

Many of Emily's Weatherford friends are currently off to college all over the country, so the plan is to wait until they are all home for the holidays to have the service so everyone has a chance to be here and attend.

I will post more details later, but save the date. It's a Sunday Afternoon. Don't have the time yet.

The Answer....

Yes, I think there is more than enough news to fill a 24 hour cycle. What we don't have is enough intelligence in the television media to fill a 24 hour cycle.

There may not be enough 5 minute stories to support a 24 hour news network, but there are enough significant issues that would do well to have more than the cursory reviews we have now. If we had stories like what populates some of NPR today, or longer then yes, I think there is more than enough news to fill a 24 hour cycle. What we don't have is enough intelligence in the television media to fill a 24 hour cycle.

Parker County's Annual Clean Up runs from 8-3 p.m. (Precinct 4 opens at 7 am). You can green up your home, or a field or road near you, or help your neighbor get rid of that unsightly garbage or unwanted items. Commissioners' precinct barns will have areas or receptacles designated for the following items: aluminum, iron, glass, newspapers, cardboard, tires (rims removed), furniture/appliances, dried paint cans, lumber, limbs and brush, batteries, oil filters, and oil.
